  • Description

AFTER SPENDING A YEAR IN THE CUBAN MOUNTAINS TEACHING PEASANTS TO READ AND WRITE, THOUSANDS OF VOLUNTEER TEACHERS AND STUDENTS CAME BACK TO HAVANA DEC 20 TO REPORT PROGRESS TO PRIME MINISTER CASTRO, AND TO RECEIVE A HERO'S WELCOME.

TRAVELLING IN OPEN RAILWAY WAGONS, THE "BRIGADISTAS" WAVED FLAGS AND SHOUTED ANTI-ILLITERACY SLOGANS AS THE TRAIN STEAMED INTO HAVANA STATION. AFTER FAMILY REUNIONS, THEY FORMED UP AND MARCHED THROUGH THE CITY TO THE HOTEL AND PRIVATE ACCOMMODATIONS RESERVED FOR THEM.

ACCORDING TO OFFICIAL FIGURES, 104,000 MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN HAVE BEEN WORKING IN THE NATION-WIDE ANTI-ILLITERACY CAMPAIGN. PRIME MINISTER CASTRO HAD PROMISED THAT BY 1962 ALL CUBANS WOULD BE LITERATE.
