    Expert canoeists from European and Iron Curtain countries battled at Geneva, Switzerland, July 25-26 for honours in the canoe slalom world championships. Three major events were the men's singles, doubles and team race.

    Paul Farrant of Britain became world champion of 1959, beating a field of 40 in the Kayaks singles. With a total of 335 points over a very difficult course, he won comfortably from the favourite, Eberhard Glaser of East Germany who had 344 points. Another East German, Heinz Bielig was third with 395.3 points.

    Three other Britons took part in this event. Ian Carmichael with 453 points came 14th, Keith White, 27th with 556 points and Julian Shaw, 34th with 744 points.

    In the team event, the East German combination of Glaser, Bielig and Mobius was expected to triumph. We regret result not known at time of writing.
