Israeli Air Force planes raided the southern coastal area of Lebanon on Wednesday morning, hitting at the port of Tyre and the surrounding area. The death toll has been unofficially estimated at about 50. The raids were in retaliation for Palestine commando rocket attacks on the Israeli honeymoon resort of Naharya.
SYNOPSIS: The air raids on the port of Tyre and the surrounding area were in addition to a two-day artillery bombardment of the same area. The Israeli Government said the raids had been purely against terrorist bases, and no civilian places were hit. Reports from the area, however, say that in one village alone, rescue workers counted the bodies of almost 50 civilians, and every house had ben destroyed.
The raids were part of action by Israel to avenge the Palestinian commando rocket attacks on Naharya ... they were the first on the South Lebanon for two years, and constituted the biggest flare-up since the ceasefire declared on September the 26th. According to Israeli Defence Minister Ezer Weizman...that ceasefire now no-longer exists. Six Israeli Air Force jets took part in the raids, which lasted for an hour and five minutes.
