    THREE MINESWEEPERS FROM BRITAIN'S "MOTHBALL FLEET" BUT BACK IN SERVICE AGAIN ARRIVED IN LAGOS ON MONDAY FOR PATROL WORK ALONG NIGERIA'S COASTLINE.

    THE THREE DEFENCE VESSELS. BUILT IN 1950, WERE TAKEN OVER BY NIGERIA IN BRITAIN IN SEPTEMBER. THEY WERE RE-NAMED "IBADAN", "BENIN" AND "KADUNA".

    ELEVEN OFFICERS TRAINED AT DARTMOUTH, THE ROYAL NAVY COLLEGE, AND 74 RATINGS CREWED THE MINESWEEPERS FOR THE VOYAGE TO LAGOS, WHICH TOOK ABOUT TWO WEEKS. EN ROUTE THEY CALLED AT WEST AFRICAN PORTS.

    THE THREE SHIPS WILL JOIN ANOTHER MINESWEEPER, "ENUGU", WHICH ARRIVED IN NIGERIA SEVERAL MONTHS AGO, IN PATROL DUTIES AND SCOUTING OPERATIONS FOR SMUGGLERS ALONG THE NIGER DELTA.

    AT A CEREMONY AFTER THE NEW ARRIVALS BERTHED, COMMODORE WEY OF THE NIGERIAN NAVY URGED THE CREWS TO CONTINUE TO MAINTAIN THE DISCIPLINE AND LOYALTY WHICH HAD BEEN CREATED IN THE NAVY.

    THE THREE MINESWEEPERS ARE ARMED WITH 40MM GUNS AND DEPTH CHARGES.
