Background: WALTER GODEFROOT OF BELGIUM WON THE 256 KILOMETRE (ABOUT 160 MILES) LIEGE-BASTOGNE-LIEGE CYCLING RACE IN BELGIUM TODAY (MONDAY). THE RACE CONSIDERED TO BE ONE OF THE TOUGHEST IN THE BELGIAN CYCLING SEASON, WAS MADE ALL THE HARDER BECAUSE OF RAIN AND COLD WEATHER.

THE RACE GOT AWAY TO A FAST START AND AFTER ONLY 25 KILOMETRES (15 MILES) THE LEADERS BEGAN THE BATTLE FOR SUPREMACY.

BY THE 60 KILOMETRE (37 MILES) MARK A GROUP OF FIFTEEN RIDERS HAD BROKEN AWAY AND ESTABLISHED A CLEAR LEAD OVER THE REST OF THE FIELD. WHEN THEY REACHED BASTOGNE, THE HALF-WAY STAGE, THEY WERE A SOLID FOUR MINUTES IN FRONT.

THE HARD CONDITIONS EXACTED A HEAVY TOLL ON THE RIDERS AND ON REACHING VERVIERS ONLY SEVEN WERE LEFT.

GODEFROOT MADE HIS MOVE AFTER THE DIFFICULT COTE DES FORGES STAGE AND BEAT EDDY MERCK, ALSO OF BELGIUM, INTO SECOND PLACE DURING THE SPRINT IN LIEGE'S RECCOURT STADIUM.
