  • Description

    As fighting continued in Amman on Wednesday (8 September) the women and children released from the first two of the airliners hi-jacked by Palestinian Commandos waited in a city hotel for the release of those still held hostage. The hotel was damaged by a bomb which fell in the forecourt on Tuesday night, shattering windows;
    After shrapnel peppered the entrance to the hotel many of the newly-arrived guests spent the rest of the night in the hotel basement or its corridors.

    Many of the women waiting with their children at the hotel are worried about their husbands who are still held hostage at the desert airstrip outside Amman.

    A relief air-crew for the Swissair plane was unable to get accommodation at the hotel as it is full for the first time for many months.

    The situation between the Jordanian soldiers and the Palestinian Commandos in Amman remains tense. Army artillery bombarded suspected guerrilla positions in the city for four hours yesterday. One traveller said that Amman "looked as if it was burning".
