  • Description

ON THE THIRD DAY OF HIS OFFICIAL VISIT TO DENMARK YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) MR. KHRUSHCHEV VISITED A CENTRE OF THE DANISH DAIRY INDUSTRY AND THEN WENT TO THE HOME OF HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN, THE 19TH CENTURY STORY WRITER AND POET.

A SMALL BUT ENTHUSIASTIC CROWD GREETED THE SOVIET PREMIER WHEN HE ARRIVED AT THE TINY COTTAGE AT ODENSE IN FUNEN WHERE THE DANISH FAIRY TALE WRITER WAS BORN IN 1805, THE SON OF A SICKLY YOUNG SHOEMAKER.

HANS ANDERSEN LIVED IN THIS ONE ROOM COTTAGE WITH HIS YOUNG MOTHER AND FATHER DURING HIS EARLY CHILDHOOD. BUT WHEN HE WAS ONLY ELEVEN HIS FATHER DIED AND HE WAS LEFT ENTIRELY TO HIS OWN DEVICES. HIS OWN STORY IS MUCH LIKE HIS FAIRY TALES. HE WENT THROUGH TWENTY YEARS OF HARDSHIP BEFORE RECOGNITION.

ON LEAVING THE HOUSE, MR. KHRUSHCHEV OBLIGED SEVERAL SMALL CHILDREN BY SIGNING THEIR AUTOGRAPH BOOKS BEFORE RETURNING TO COPENHAGEN IN THE EVENING FOR DINNER WITH THE PRIME MINISTER, MR. JENS OTTO KRAG, AND HIS WIFE.
