  • Description

The 60-year old American businessman Robert McCann, who spent ten years in a Chinese prison on charges of alleged espionage and contravening currency regulations, arrived in Hong Kong April 6 after crossing the border on a stretcher borne by Chinese Red Cross personnel.

McCann was to have been flown from Peking to Canton, but since aircraft were grounded because of bad weather, he came to the Chinese-Hong Kong border by train from Tsientsin Prison. He was immediately taken to St. Theresa's hospital for a check-up before being flown with his wife the next day to the Philippines, from where they were scheduled to fly on to California.

His wife was allowed into the Chinese People's Republic late last month to meet her husband, who was reported dying of lung cancer. Her pleas for his release and repatriation were granted.

There are still four Americans serving prison sentences in China.
