  • Description

SOUTH VIETNAMESE TROOPS AND POLICE CLASHED IN SAIGON TODAY (FRIDAY) WITH HUNDREDS OF STONE-THROWING BUDDHIST DEMONSTRATORS IN FRONT OF THE UNITED STATES EMBASSY. IT WAS THE LATEST IN A SERIES OF DEMONSTRATIONS BY THE BUDDHISTS AGAINST THE TRAN VAN HUONG REGIME.

IN WEDNESDAY'S RIOT SOUTH VIETNAMESE TROOPS HURLED TEAR-GAS GRENADES AT A YELLING, ROCK-THROWING CROWD OUTSIDE THE BUDDHIST HEADQUARTERS. INSIDE, FIVE LEADING BUDDHIST MONKS HAD BEGUN A "DO OR DIE" HUNGER STRIKE TO TOPPLE THE GOVERNMENT OF PRIME MINISTER TRAN VAN HUONG.

THE DEMONSTRATORS, LED BY THREE MEN WEARING MONKS' ROBES, SHOUTED ANTI-GOVERNMENT SLOGANS. THEY DEMONSTRATED FOR ABOUT 15 MINUTES BEFORE PARATROOPERS MOVED IN WITH FIXED BAYONETS. THE TROOPS FIRED BLANKS IN THE AIR, AS THE DEMONSTRATORS HIT THEM WITH ROCKS, AND LATER HURLED TWO BATCHES OF TEAR-GAS GRENADES.

AFTER THE CROWD RETREATED THROUGH THE TEAR-GAS CLOUDS BACK INSIDE THE BUDDHIST HEADQUARTERS, TWO MONKS AND 50 DEMONSTRATORS SAT ON THE STREET HOOTING AND JEERING AT THE TROOPS.

AT A PRESS CONFERENCE HELD INSIDE THE HEADQUARTERS THAT DAY, THE REVEREND THICH TAM CHAU, SAID HE AND FOUR OTHER MONKS, INCLUDING THICH TRI QUANG, HEAD OF BUDDHIST RELIGIOUS AFFAIRS, VOWED TO FAST EVEN UNTO DEATH UNTIL THE GOVERNMENT OF PRIME MINISTER TRAN VAN HUONG WAS OVERTHROWN.

MEANWHILE, FOUR SOUTH VIETNAMESE GENERALS ASSUMED THEIR CABINET POSTS, THUS ENDING THE LATEST GOVERNMENT CRISIS. THEY JOINED THE OTHER MINISTERS WHEN PRIME MINISTER TRAN VAN HUONG PRESENTED HIS NEW CABINET TO THE CHIEF OF STATE, MR. PHAN KAC KHAC SUU.

(IN TODAY'S DISTURBANCES TROOPS THREW TEAR-GAS GRENADES TO DISPERSE THE DEMONSTRATORS WHO GATHERED IN FRONT OF THE EMBASSY WITH ABOUT 200 BUDDHIST MONKS.

(THE DEMONSTRATORS -- PROTESTING AGAINST AMERICAN SUPPORT FOR THE PRESENT SOUTH VIETNAMESE GOVERNMENT -- BEGAN THROWING STONES WHEN TROOPS TRIED TO PUSH THEM BACK FROM THE EMBASSY.

(A RUNNING BATTLE BETWEEN TROOPS AND RIOTERS DEVELOPED ON A HALF-MILE STRETCH OF ROAD LEADING FROM THE EMBASSY TO THE CITY MARKET. MONKS RAN IN ALL DIRECTIONS WHEN TEAR-GAS GRENADES EXPLODED. ABOUT A DOZEN PEOPLE WERE SEEN SPRAWLED OUT ON THE PAVEMENT.)
