  • Description

Several times on Monday (19 May) National Guardsmen forced columns of demonstrators, as many as 2,000 and at a time, back to the University of California campus from downtown Berkeley had vowed to close private businesses. Several military demonstrators were clubbed when they refused to move on command by the National Guardsmen.

The student demonstrators latest tactic was focused on Berkelev's businesses. The students taunted police urging them to use tear gas which would have effectively closed the business district. The police refused and, using clubs and threats, around the students toward the campus. Once on the campus, the police and Guardsmen attacked the students with teargas.

The struggle between National Guard-backed police and the demonstrators in Berkelev claimed its first life on Monday night when James Rector, 25, died in a hospital of a gunshot wound in the stomach which was inflicted last Thursday. Rector was not a student. In Monday's demonstration one demonstrator suffered a bayonet wound in the shoulder and several others were clubbed.

The demonstrations were set off when the university's administration closed a "People's Park" last Thursday. The land is owned by the university, but a number of students and sympathizers spent weeks converting it into a usable park. The university wants to build dormitories on the land.
