BELGIAN CYCLE ACE EDDY MERCKX, 1969 TOUR DE FRANCE WINNER, WON THE FOUR STAGES OF THE CYCLE TOUR IN AN AGGREGATE TIME OF 20 HOURS, 47 MINUTES AND 58 SECONDS.

    SOME 50 RIDERS HAD DROPPED OUT OF THE TOUR IN THE THIRD STAGE FORM JAMBES TO HEYST. THE COMPETITORS IN THE FOURTH STAGE SET OUT IN WINDY AND RAINY WEATHER.

    IN THE TOWN OF LUEZE, A NUMBER OF PEOPLE CAME OUT TO CHEER MERCKX ON.

    ABOUT 46 MILES (75 KMS) FROM BRUSSELS, GERBEN KARSTENS AND VAN VLIERDERGHE OF BELGIUM PULLED AHEAD OF THE LARGER GROUPS OF CYCLISTS AND MAINTAINED THE LEAD UNTIL THEY CROSSED THE FINISH LINE AT WOLUWE ST-LAMBERT IN BRUSSELS.

    AFTER THE FINAL TOUR RESULTS HAD BEEN ANNOUNCED, MERCKX WAS GIVEN A BOUQUET OF FLOWERS.
