Background: The scene is Ruislip Lido, near London, July 16, and there are bathers in the water...yachts sailing along in the breeze... water-skiers racing past...
A typical summer's day scene - except that the bathers are not there just for the fun of it. They are converts of the extremist Jehovah's Witnesses religious sect, - 500 of them all told.
Young and old, British and foreign, they have come for immersion-type baptism, and there to give them their mystic ducking were official "immerses", standing waist-deep in water as they performed the big dip.
The converts - men and women alike - submerged in batches of 16. One of the youngest was an 11-year-old Sikh who took his dip wearing a turban. Oldest woman "baptisee" was 81-year-old Mrs. Edith Harris of Teddington, UK.
