  • Description

INTRODUCTION: The fourth meeting of an organisation designed to help develop Western Asia opened in Amman, Jordan, on Sunday (24 April) - with a decision to admit the Palestine Liberation Organisation. It's the Economic Commission for Western Asia (E.C.W.A.), which was formed under the auspices of the United Nations in 1974.

SYNOPSIS: The meeting, held in the Palace of Culture, was attended by delegates from 12 Arab countries as full members, and several consultants from non-member states in Europe. It was opened by Prince Hassan of Jordan.

One of the first decisions made at Sunday's meeting was to admit the Palestine Liberation Organisation as a full member. Until now the PLO has had only observer status. This decision requires the approval of the United Nations Economic and Social Council in New York.

ECWA's work programme concentrates on such priority areas as water resources, food, industry, manpower, tourism, natural resources, transport, communications and finance.

Jordan has always taken a keen interest in the Commission's work, and its headquarters are now located in Amman after being moved from Beirut because of the civil war in Lebanon.
