  • Description

Hundreds of angry lorry drivers, protesting against rising fuel costs, blocked roads into Paris with their vehicles on Monday(23 September). Moving very slowly in convoy, they caused massive rush-hour traffic jams.

The French Government is planning to charge around GBP1.20 sterling (about 2.90 US dollars) a gallon (4.5 litres) for petrol as part of a proposed two-tier rationing scheme.

Under the plan, motorists will be issued with coupons to buy a restricted amount of petrol at the present price of about 75 pence (about ???.80 US dollars) per gallon. Unrationed petrol will be sold only at the higher price.

These measures are part of the French Government's efforts to reduce fuel imports and curb inflation. A ten-per-cent reduction would cut about GBP500 million (1,200 million US dollars) from France's fuel bill.
