  • Description

Belgian troops arriving at Brussels airport to fly out to the Congo Republic, July 60, were in time to see a plane-load of refugees fly in. The troops went onto the runway and assisted women and children from the aircraft, before boarding their own military plane.

Belgian Minister of defence M. Gilson, who arrived at the airport to review the troops, spoke to several mothers carrying small children. The troops will land in the Katanga Province - declared independent by Provincial Premier Tshombe - where Belgian troops have managed to restore order. As yet there are no United Nations troops in Katanga.

It is through the Belgian forces that Premier Tshombe has managed to keep the area under control. Many of the Force Publique - the Congolese national army who mutined against their European officers - are working with the Belgian forces.
