  • Description

In Delhi October 2, celebrations were held to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi, 'Father of the Indian Nation.'
Throughout the day, huge crowds gathered at the Samadhi of Mahatma Gandhi, - shrine of India's great social reformer and moral teacher who was assassinated in 1948.

Premier Nehru, President Rajendra Prasad and Mrs. Indian Gandhi joined in mass prayers and the commemorative spinning ceremony. Gandhi regarded spinning as the only answer to India's economic problems, and as an act of moral value for the individual, close to the Buddhist concept of gaining virtue by meditation.

A group of singers from Kathiawar, Gandhi's birthplace, sang hymns at the memorial.

Friday evening prayers are being said for a number of weeks as this year's anniversary falls on the day of the week on which Gandhi was killed.
