  • Description

A routine take-off operation almost ended in disaster for a United States Air Force Voodoo jet fighter at Itazuke air base at Kyushu, in Japan, yesterday (Tuesday).

The Voodoo - an RF-101 reconnaissance aircraft - was in the second formation of three jets to take-off. Flames spurted from its engine and fuselage only a few above the ground. The aircraft continued along the runway until the flames extinguished themselves.

The pilot, Captain William B. Seiber, of Louisville, Kentucky, was only slightly injured. The accident happened as 18 Voodoos, stationed at Kyushu since the Pueblo incident last year, took-off for their home base in Missouri, U.S.A.
