  • Description

Portuguese President General Francisco da Costa Gomes arrived in Rome on Wednesday (22 October) for a whirlwind 24 hour state visit to Italy.

The Portuguese leader immediately met with his Italian counterpart, Giovanni Leone and Italy's Prime Minister, Aldo Moro.

Later in the day, General Gomes had an audience with Pope Paul.

General Gomes told President Leone that the job of Portugal's sixth provisional government was "quite difficult" and said its immediate aim was to restore discipline.

He said the discipline must not be in the form of fascism, but an authority to maintain democracy.

The Government, he said, was trying to achieve social and economic stability, "something which is always difficult to fulfil in a revolution."
General Gomes said the support of the European Economic Community (EEC) would help his country to attain its goals as "European country and a member of NATO."
He added that he hope EEC's promise of aid and support would be reflected by the business world in general.

Pope Paul also offered the Portuguese President his support. The Pontiff offered him the Roman Catholic Church's full collaboration.

In a statement issued after their meeting, the Vatican said that it offered collaboration without seeking any privileges, only "guaranteed liberty" for the church to carry out its work in Portugal.

President Gomes will visit Yugoslavia on the next leg of his European tour.
