Background: A CROWDED HOUSE OF COMMONS TODAY (TUESDAY) PUT ON RECORD ITS 'UNBOUNDED ADMIRATION AND GRATITUDE' FOR SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL'S SERVICES TO PARLIAMENT, BRITAIN AND THE WORLD.

IT WAS A SAD HOUSE OF COMMONS, HEAVY WITH EMOTION, WITH ONE SEAT CONSPICUOUSLY LEFT VACANT - THAT NORMALLY OCCUPIED IN RECENT YEARS BY SIR WINSTON, WHO IS RETIRING AT THE END OF THIS PRESENT SESSION. THE EMOTION WAS MOVED BY THE PRIME MINISTER, SIR ALEC DOUGLAS HOME, WHO SAID IT REMEMBERED ABOVE ALL CHURCHILL'S 'INSPIRATION TO THE BRITISH PEOPLE WHEN THEY STOOD ALONE, AND HIS LEADERSHIP UNTIL THE VICTORY WAS WON'.

LADY CHURCHILL, SIR WINSTON'S SON, RANDOLPH AND HIS TWO SONS-IN LAW, MR. DUNCAN SANDYS AND MR. CHRISTOPHER SOAMES, WERE IN THE GALLERY OF THE COMMONS TO HEAR THE TRIBUTES. SIR WINSTON WAS NOT PRESENT - HE MADE HIS FINAL VISIT TO THE HOUSE AS A MEMBER YESTERDAY (MONDAY).

WHEN THE MOTION WAS PASSED, THE FAMILY LEFT FOR SIR WINSTON'S LONDON HOME, TO BE WITH HIM WHEN THE SPECIAL DELEGATION OF MP'S ARRIVED TO PRESENT A COPY OF IT TO SIR WINSTON HIMSELF.

THE DELEGATION WAS MADE UP OF THE THREE PARTY LEADERS: SIR ALEC DOUGLAS HOME (CONSERVATIVE), MR. WILSON (LABOUR) AND MR. GRIMMOND PARTIES WITH THE LONGEST RECORD OF SERVICE IN THE COMMONS - APART FROM SIR WINSTON HIMSELF AND THE LEADER OF THE HOUSE, MR. SELWYN LLOYD.

AMONG THE LARGE AND ENTHUSIASTIC CROWD WHO GATHERED OUTSIDE IN THE HOPE OF SEEING SIR WINSTON, WAS A CRANK WHO CAUSED A MINOR DISTURBANCE AND WAS ESCORTED AWAY BY THE POLICE.
