    The biennial Tokyo International Trade Fair celebrated its tenth anniversary when it opened on Friday (20 April) with a record 28 countries taking part.

    The first Tokyo Trade Fair was held in 1955. Since then the scale and scope of the event has expanded steadily, reflecting the technological progress made by the participating countries during the past decade of economic growth. The organisers say this year's fair places emphasis on the promotion of imports from aborad.

    The range of goods and products on display is vast -- sporting equipment and furniture form Australia; cement and cigars form Cuba; machinery form East Germany; textiles form Mexico; and traditional dolls form Korea.

    For its tenth anniversary showing, the Tokhyo International Trade Fair Commission has decided to adopt a new system; that of grouping similar or related goods in the same exhibition area. This, they hope, will give the event new look.

    Some 2,000,000 visitors are expected during the 18-day fair. The organisers expect that 38,000 million Yen's worth (???54,000,000) of business will be concluded during the fair.
