Three main contesting parties are the United National Party - favourites to win the election - led by former Premier Dudley Senanayake; the People's United Front, led by former Minster Philip Gunawardene; and the late Premier's Sri Lanka Freedom party, now under the patronage of his widow, Mrs. Bandaranaike.

Premier Dahanayake, formerly of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, recently resigned to lead the new Ceylon Democratic Party. Other parties in the field of include the Trotskyist Lanka Sama Samaj party, which had the largest number of opposition candidates in the dissolved 101-seat Parliament; the Communists; and the Federal Party.
