Background: At least 16 people were killed in El Salvador on Thursday (27 March) in clashes with security forces following Wednesday's (26 March) declaration by leftist militants that they had put themselves on war footing to overthrow the country's ruling junta. The latest killings came on the third and final day of mourning decreed by the government for San Salvador's Archbishop Oscar Arnulfo Romero. Monsignor romero, an outspoken civil right defender, was assassinated on Monday (24 March) as he celebrated mass at a city hospital. Church leaders and leftist militants have blamed extreme rightists for death.

SYNOPSIS: On the second day of mourning, the Archbishop's body was carried through the streets of San Salvador to lie in state at the cathedral where only days before he held mass.

Thousands turned out for the solemn procession. Monsignor Romero preached a message of non-violence, but his assassination has touched off a wave of shooting and bombings.

The Archbishop was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize last year (1979). He will be buried in the cathedral on Sunday (30/3). To reduce the change of violence, no processions are planned for the funeral.
