The Prime Minister of the former Portuguese colony of Sao Tome and Principe, Senor Miguel Trovoada, arrived in Lisbon on Wednesday (20 October) for an official visit.

SYNOPSIS: He was met at Lisbon Airport by the Portuguese Prime Minister, Dr. Mario Soares. It was Mr. Trovoada's first official visit to Portugal since the colony gained independence in July last year. The colony's independence came in the wake of the revolution which overthrew the dictatorship of Dr. Marcello Caetano.

Mr. Trovoada arrived in Portugal after a tour of the Soviet Union and eastern Europe. He has been Prime Minister since the independence of Sao Tome and Principe, and is a leading member of the country's nationalist movement which administered the country in co-operation with the outgoing Portuguese authorities between November, 1974 and independence. Sao Tome and Principe, two small islands off the west coast of central Africa, now form the smallest independent state in Africa.

The day after his arrival, the Sao Tome Prime Minister went to Dr. Soares' residence for talks with the Portuguese Prime Minister. Mr. Trovoada was also due to have talks with President Antonio Ramalho Eanes during his three-day stay.
