  • Description

An unusual competition was recently held in Rome, when the management of the city's Zoological Gardens invited professional and amateur painters of all nationalities, resident in the country, to come and put on canvas any subject of their choice at the zoo.

An age limit 0.21 was set for the entrants, and to assure genuine on-the-spot work, competitors had to hand over their uncompleted pictures to an appointed committee each time they wanted to leave the grounds.

About 200 young artist - Italian and foreign, well established and up-and-coming - were attracted by the original idea and worked with zeal on their canvases, depicting graceful giraffes, frisky seals, shaggy hears, majestic lions, fierce jaguars, splendidly plumed birds and the like. Some concentrated on the idyllic vistas of the paths and promenades, but the majority devoted their shill to the generously provided live model of the captive animal world. They all seemed to enjoy themselves immensely and the competition was a great success.
