  • Description

THE FIRST DUTCH VESSEL TO ENTER INDONESIAN WATERS IN MORE THAN THREE YEARS TIED UP IN DJAKARTA HARBOUR ON MONDAY, (DECEMBER 2). SHE IS THE ROYAL DUTCH LINE PASSENGER SHIP, KEERKRING, WHICH HAS BEEN CHARTERED BY PRIVATE COMPANY TO SERVE THE PASSENGER TRADE BETWEEN PORTS IN JAVA AND SULAWESI.

THE KEERKRING'S ARRIVAL IN DJAKARTA MARKED THE RETURN OF DUTCH SHIPPING TO INDONESIA FOLLOWING A BAN ON THE ROYAL DUTCH LINE IN 1957, AND THE FORMAL BREAKING OF RELATIONS BETWEEN INDONESIA AND THE NETHERLANDS IN JULY 1960. THE INDONESIAN GOVERNMENT LIFTED THE BAN LAST JULY.

A SPOKESMAN FOR THE CHARTERING COMPANY SAID THE SHIP WOULD CARRY UP TO 1250 PASSENGERS IN NON-LUXURY ACCOMMODATION. THE KEERKRING, 4 THOUSANDS TONS, HAS BEEN CHARTERED FOR THREE MONTHS WITH OPTIONS OF RENEWAL FRO FURTHER THREE MONTHS PERIODS.

THE SHIP WAS FORMALLY HANDED OVER AT A CEREMONY WHERE THE CHARTER AGREEMENT WAS SIGNED BY THE DJAKARTA HARBOURMASSER, MR. SUWONDO, THE SHIP'S MASTER, CAPTAIN H.N. SCHEPMAN, THE LOCAL ROYAL DUTCH LINE REPRESENTATIVE, MR. J.A. VAN DEN BROEK, AND, A REPRESENTATIVE OF THE INDONESIAN NATIONAL LINE.

CAPTAIN SCHEPMAN HAS BEEN MASTER OF THE KEERKRING FOR MORE THAN SIX YEARS, AND SAILED HER IN INDONESIAN WATERS UNDER THE NAME, VAN RIEMSDIJCK, BEFORE THE BAN IN 1957 ON THE ROYAL DUTCH LINE.
