  • Description

Following a meeting with the Foreign Minister of Chad and the Secretary General of the United Nations, French Foreign Minister Jean Sauvagnargues told reporters his country had ni intention of supplying military equipment or aid to rebels in Chad as part of a deal to free a French archaeologist held hostage by the rebels. He said France was determined to retain good relations with the Government of Chad and that whatever not damage these relations. But he said, "We are bound to take some steps because we are faced with an emergency".

The archaeologist, Francoise Claustre, has been held captive for 17 months. Earlier this week the rebels backed off on their threat to kill her. Recently they also captured her husband.

Chad has objected strongly to France's efforts to negotiate directly with the rebels and has been supported by the Organisation of African Unity.

Earlier this week, the Foreign Minister of Chad denounced France for "interference" in Chad's internal affairs.
