Background: Instead of the grim spectre of seeing animals preserved in musty bottles of liquid on dusty shelves in the biological department of museums, the Danes have found a way of preserving them for keeps in an attractive transparent block of plastic.

After some years of tests to find the right formula, a clear unbreakable plastic material now preserves animals, butterflies and plants. The result was shown this week at an international school exhibition. Later the exhibits will be used in schools's biology classes. More will go to museums.

The subject for preservation is placed in a container, then the liquid solution is poured in. The container, sealed, then undergoes a heating process. The operation duly over, the result is a crystal-clear plastic block.
