Background: ATHLETICS: A WORLD INDOOR RECORD WAS BROKEN AND ANOTHER EQUALLED AT A MEETING IN LOS ANGELES ON SATURDAY NIGHT. A NEW WORLD MARK WAS SET IN THE POLE VAULT, AND THE RECORD EQUALLED IN THE MEN'S 60 YARD DASH. BUT BOTH PERFORMANCES WERE OVERSHADOWED BY THE CHAMPION KENYAN DISTANCE RUNNER, KIPCHOGE KEINO. HE WON THE TWO MILES AFTER COMING SECOND IN THE MILE ONLY AN HOUR BEFORE.

THE 60 YARDS WAS WON IN 5.9 SECONDS -- EQUALLING THE INDOOR RECORD HELD BY THE OLYMPIC 100 METRES CHAMPION, BOB HAYES, AND TWO OTHER AMERICANS. IN THE POLE VAULT, JOHN PENNEL, WHO HOLDS THE OUTDOOR RECORD, ADDED THE INDOOR RECORD TO HIS NAME WITH A LEAP OF 16 FEET 9 1/2 INCHES -- THREE-QUARTERS OF AN INCH BETTER THAN THE EXISTING RECORD SET BY FINLAND'S PENTTI NIKULA IN 1963.

FOR KEINO, IT WAS THE FIRST TIME HE HAD RUN ON BOARDS. THE WORLD 5000 METRES RECORD-HOLDER LED FOR MOST OF THE RACE, ONLY TO BE PASSED BY THE POWERFUL GRELLE ON THE LAST OF THE 11 LAPS. THE WINNING TIME 4 MINUTES 0.9 SECONDS -- MORE THAN FOUR SECONDS OUTSIDE THE INDOOR RECORD.

AN HOUR LATER, KEINO WAS OUT ON THE BOARDS AGAIN -- FOR THE TWO MILES. THIS TIME, HOWEVER, HE ALLOWED THE OTHERS TO SET THE PACE. WITH LESS THAN A LAP TO GO, HE MADE HIS CHALLENGE AND PASSED AMERICA'S JOHN LAWSON TO WIN IN 8 MINUTES 42.6 SECONDS -- 12 SECONDS SLOWER THAN THE INDOOR RECORD.
