  • Description

JACK NICKLAUS, 23-YEAR-OLD AMERICAN, ON SUNDAY BECAME THE YOUNGEST PLAYER EVER TO WIN THE UNITED STATES MASTERS GOLF TOURNAMENT, AT AUGUSTA, GEORGIA. FIGHTING BACK A SUCCESSION OF STRONG CHALLENGES, HE SCORED A FINAL 72 TO FINISH, AT 286, ONLY ONE STROKE AHEAD OF CALIFORNIAN TONY LEMA.

ON THE FINAL HOLE, NICKLAUS -- LAST MAN ON THE COURSE -- NEEDED A TWO-FOOT PUTT FOR HIS PAR FOUR AND VICTORY. HE ALMOST MISSED IT. BUT THE BALL CURVED TOWARDS THE CUP, HIT THE RIM, AND DROPPED IN AS THE CROWD LET OUT A ROAR. HIS VICTORY WAS WORTH ABOUT GBP7,000.

DEFENDING CHAMPION, ARNOLD PALMER, MAKING HIS TRY FOR A FOURTH MASTERS TITLE, TRAILED THROUGHOUT THE TOURNAMENT TO FINISH FIVE STROKES BEHIND. NICKLAUS HAS NOW BEATEN PALMER IN THEIR LAST THREE MAJOR CLASHES.

GARY PLAYER, OF SOUTH AFRICA, FINISHED THE TOURNAMENT TWO STROKES AHEAD OF PALMER ON 289. HE MADE A STRONG LAST-ROUND ATTACK, BUT WAS PLAGUED BY PUTTING TROUBLES. SAM SNEAD, NOW 51-YEARS-OLD, ALSO PUT A GOOD CHALLENGE IN THE LAST ROUND BUT HE, TOO, SEEMED UNABLE TO GET DOWN CRUCIAL PUTTS. FOR MUCH OF THE MATCH HE HAD CAPTURED THE CHEERS OF THE 30,000-SPECTATORS GALLERY AS HE ALSO TRIED FOR HIS FOURTH MASTERS TITLE. SNEAD FINISHED ON 288 -- LEVEL THIRD WITH JULIUS BOROS.
