  • Description

A TEXAN DRIVER, A.J.FOYT, OF HOUSTON, WON ONE OF THE MOST TRAGIC INDIANAPOLIS SPEEDWAY 500-MILE RACES IN HISTORY ON SATURDAY (30 MAY). FOYT SURVIVED A FLAME-SEARED RACE TO BECOME THE SECOND MAN EVER TO WIN THE '500' TWICE.

HE SET A NEW RECORD OF 147.3 MILES AN HOUR, MORE THAN FOUR MILES AN HOUR FASTER THAN THE OLD RECORD, SET BY PARNELLI JONES IN 1963.

THE EVENT, WITNESSED BY 350,000, LOST MUCH OF ITS LUSTER AS DRIVERS EDDIE SACHS OF DETROIT, USA, AND DAVE MACDONALD OF CALIFORNIA, USA, WERE KILLED IN A SEVEN-CAR SMASH ON THE SECOND LAP. EACH LAP WAS TOW AND A HALF MILES. FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HISTORY THE RACE WAS STOPPED BECAUSE OF AN ACCIDENT AND WAS RE-STARTED AFTER AN HOUR AND 45 MINUTES.

MACDONALD, DRIVING IN THE 500 FOR THE FIRST TIME, WENT INTO A SPIN ON THE SECOND LAP AND SACHS PILED INTO HIM. BOTH CARS BURST INTO FLAMES. BOTH DRIVERS DIED OF BURNS.

AS THE RACE WENT ON, ONE FAVOURITE AFTER ANOTHER DROPPED OUT. JIM CLARK OF SCOTLAND WAS FINISHED BY A COLLAPSED REAR SUSPENSION. PARNELLI JONES' CAR CAUGHT FIRE IN THE PITS. ONLY TWELVE OF THE ORIGINAL 33 STARTERS FINISHED.

FOYT DROVE A SHERATON-THOMPSON SPECIAL, A TRADITIONAL TYPE WITH A FOUR-CYLINDER OFFENHAUSER ENGINE MOUNTED IN FRONT. THE NEW REAR-ENGINED ENTRIES, EXPECTED TO SWEEP THE RACE, FAILED TO LIVE UP TO ADVANCE NOTICES.

FOYT TOOK THE LEAD FOR KEEPS ON THE 55TH LAP. THE SIZE OF THE TOTAL PURSE IS NOT YET KNOWN BUT FOYT MAY GET NEARLY GBP70,000. HIS PREVIOUS VICTORY WAS IN 1961, WHEN HE BEAT SACHS BY 8 SECONDS.

ROGER WARD OF INDIANAPOLIS FINISHED SECOND TO FOYT IN A FORD POWERED KAISER ALUMINIUM SPECIAL.
