  • Description

RAIN CURTAILED THE PROGRAMME OF THE BOXING FINALS IN THE GHANA ARMED FORCES CHAMPIONSHIPS ON SUNDAY. ONLY THREE OF THE ELEVEN SCHEDULED BOUTS WERE CONTESTED.

THE REMAINING BOUTS WILL BE DECIDED ON SATURDAY.

GUESTS AT THE CHAMPIONSHIPS INCLUDED AIR MARSHAL OTU, THE PRESIDENT OF THE ARMED FORCES SPORTS CONTROL BOARD, THE CHAIRMAN OF THE NATIONAL LIBERATION COUNCIL, LIEUTENANT GENERAL ANKRAH, AND MRS. ANKRAH.

THE MOST INTERESTING BOUT OF THE THREE WAS IN THE LIGHTWEIGHT DIVISION, BETWEEN AMOS AJAO, OF NUMBER ONE BRIGADE, AND MAXIM AMOO, OF GARRISON HEADQUARTERS.

BOTH FIGHTERS WERE WELL PRIMED FOR THE BOUT AND IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. HOWEVER, THE EXPERIENCED AMOO, WEARING NUMBER FIVE, PROVED TOO MUCH FOR THE LESS SEASONED AJAO.

IN AN EARLIER FEATHERWEIGHT CONTEST, CASSIUS ARYEE OF NUMBER ONE BRIGADE, OUTPOINTED DOKU, OF NUMBER TWO BRIGADE. DAKU, TALL AND LITHE FOUGHT WITH GUSTO AND DETERMINATION. HOWEVER, ARYEE, SHOWING A GREATER SKILL, WON WITH A UNANIMOUS POINTS DECISION.

THE THIRD CONTEST, IN THE BANTAMWEIGHT DIVISION, WAS BETWEEN GOMEZ, OF GARRISON HEADQUARTERS, AND J. COFIE, NUMBER ONE BRIGADE. IT PROVED AN EASY CONTEST FOR COFIE, WEARING WHITE SHORTS. COFIE PUNISHED HIS LESS EXPERIENCED RIVAL FOR THE FIRST ROUND, AND FOR THE FIRST MINUTE OF THE ROUND. CAPTAIN KWASI OTENG CALLED THE FIGHT TO AN END, AND GAVE COFIE A WIN BY A TECHNICAL KNOCK-OUT.
