    PRESIDENT TUBMAN OF LIBERIA ATTENDED THE INAUGURATION CEREMONY FOR THE NEW MOROVIAN WATER SUPPLY SYSTEM AT WHITE PLAINS ON WEDNESDAY (8 JANUARY).

    THE NEW SYSTEM HAS A MAXIMUM CAPACITY OF 12 MILLION GALLONS OF WATER TO THE CITY DAILY.

    THE WHITE PLAINS PLANT WAS DESIGNED BY ALVORD BURDICK AND HOWSON, WHOSE SENIOR PARTNER, MR. LOUIS HOWSON, HANDED OVER THE KEYS OF THE SUPPLY TO MR. TAYLOR-MAJOR, THE CHAIRMAN OF THE PUBLIC UTILITIES AUTHORITY. MR. MAJOR GAVE THE KEY TO PRESIDENT TUBMAN, WHO SWITCHED ON THE NEW WATER SUPPLY.

    IN HIS SPEECH THE PRESIDENT CONGRATULATED EVERYONE WHO HAD HELPED IN THE PROJECT. AFTER THE OPENING CEREMONY, THE PRESIDENT AND THE OTHER DISTINGUISHED VISITORS TOURED THE INSTALLATIONS.

    THE NEW SYSTEM COST NEARLY NINE MILLION DOLLARS. THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATION PROVIDED THE TECHNICAL PERSONNEL TO CONDUCT A SURVEY ON THE WATER PROBLEM, AND THE UNITED STATES PROVIDED A LOAN OF OVER SEVEN MILLION DOLLARS TOWARDS THE CONSTRUCTION COSTS. THE REST OF THE MONEY CAME FROM THE LIBERIAN GOVERNMENT AND THE PUBLIC UTILITY AUTHORITY.
