    Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia took time off form his country's internal troubles to attend a special memorial service for the late President Pompidou of France on Saturday (6 April).

    The service took place in the magnificent Holy Trinity Cathedral in Addis Ababa. On the same day world heads of state were at the main memorial service for President Pompidou in Paris, France. The Emperor sent Ras Asrate Kassa the head of Ethiopia's Crown Council and one of the country's most powerful noblemen to the Paris service.

    President Pompadou visited Ethiopia only last year. He reduced the interest on a French defence loan to Ethiopia and Promised France would not abandon Affars and Issas Ethiopia's neighboring country.

    Ethiopian Prime Minister Lij Endalkatchem Makonnen, French Ambassador Mr. Albert Treca, and his wife and other foreign officials and clergy were at the Addis Ababa ceremony.

    Ethiopia is suffering many strikes and demonstrations at the moment. Workers demonstrated outside the 81-year-old Emperor's palace the day before the service, demanding better wages and the removal of certain court officials.
