  • Description

THE GREEK COMPOSER, MIKIS THEODORAKIS, HAD HIS APPEAL AGAINST THREE CONVICTIONS UPHELD IN AN ATHENS APPEAL COURT TODAY (MONDAY). THEODORAKIS, WHO WROTE THE "ZORBA THE GREEK" MUSIC, HAS SPENT THE LAST SIX MONTHS IN PRISON. EACH OF THE THREE CONVICTIONS QUASHED OR REDUCED BY THE COURT WERE FOR TERMS LONGER THAN SIX MONTHS.

BUT THERE IS NOW THE POSSIBILITY THAT THEODORAKIS WILL BE DEPORTED TO THE GREEK ISLAND OF LEROS, WHERE THERE IS A PRISON FOR DETAINEES. MEANWHILE, THE COMPOSER'S DEFENCE COUNSEL, CHRISTOPHER ARGYROPOULOS, HAS REQUESTED THAT THEODORAKIS BE FREED UNDER A CHRISTMAS AMNESTY ANNOUNCED BY PRIME MINISTER, GEORGE PAPADOPOULOS. THE LAWYER MADE THE REQUEST AFTER THE THREE-MAN TRIBUNAL HAD UPHELD HIS CLIENT'S APPEAL AGAINST THE CONVICTIONS, WHICH WERE FOR INSULTING AND RESISTING THE AUTHORITIES. THE COURT DISMISSED ONE CHARGE COMPLETELY AND REDUCED SENTENCES OF EIGHT MONTHS ON EACH OF THE OTHER CHARGES TO FOUR MONTHS, 15 DAYS AND FOURTH MONTHS RESPECTIVELY. THEODORAKIS HAD BEEN DENIED HIS FREEDOM UNDER THE AMNESTY BECAUSE HIS CONVICTIONS HAD CARRIED SENTENCES OF MORE THAN SIX MONTHS.

AFTER THE VERDICT, THEODORAKIS TOLD REPORTERS: "I AM SATISFIED THAT THE COURT REDUCED MY PRISON SENTENCES. I WILL NOW APPEAL FOR THE AMNESTY." THEODORAKIS WAS ONE OF A GROUP OF PEOPLE CONVICTED FOR PLOTTING TO OVERTHROW GREECE'S MILITARY REGIME.
