  • Description

Egyptian President, Anwar Sadat, has attended the 25th anniversary celebrations marking the introduction of the Agrarian Rewform Law.

SYNOPSIS: The occasion coincided with Egypt's annual Farmers' Day. It took place at the Arab Socialist Union building in Cairo. Many of these farmers have been helped by the Agrarian Law - which increased the number of people who own land.

The Chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organisation, Yasser Arafat, was among those who greeted the President. Agriculture is the most important sector of the Egyptian economy. It accounts for nearly a third of Egypt's output. And it provides more than half the country's exports.

But every year Egypt is becoming less able to feed itself, and Mr. Sadat wants to increased output.

Mr. Sadat told his audience that twenty five years ago less than three per cent of the population owned more than half the land. The agrarian reforms after the 1952 revolution strictly limited the number of acres people could own.

Since then more than 850 thousand acres have been distributed to over 400,000 families. As part of the celebrations the President personally handed over ownership certificates to the latest group of Agrarian reforms farmers.

Most of Egypt's farmer own very small plots of less than five acres. The President said the Government's policy is aimed at encouraging individuals, companies and co-operatives to reclaim new land.
