Background: American barracks stood empty all over South Vietnam in the wake of the US withdrawal. Former bar girls who once made a good living off the departed servicemen began looking for a new living. At towns adjoining base camps all over the country, bars and message parlours stood closed and locked. A few bars remained open but patronised now by South Vietnamese soldiers whose meagre salaries can never rival the free-spending Americans. One enduring monument to the US presence was still the black market of equipment and imported goods which once flowed out of every American PX. Supplies are already dwindly and prices are sharply rising now the last PX has closed. In some places, South Vietnamese soldiers and civilians have l???ted the abandoned US buildings including some set aside for the international Control Commission which stays on to supervise the present, uneasy ceasefire.
