Background: President Hubert Maga attended the opening ceremony of Cotonou's most imposing hotel on Thursday (30 December). The hotel, the "Croix du Sud" was built in 1963 but began to feel the years and was in many ways overtaken in amenities by other hotels in Dahomey's capital and neighbouring countries. After the government recognised the value of its tourists' receipts for the national economy it decided to modernise the hotel. The result: a hotel that ranks with the most modern in Africa, a swimming pool unique in the continent and plans for a 400-seat cinema to be added to the complex.
In Cotonou, Dahomey, one of the most modern hotels in Africa has just been Completed, using the basis of the Croix du Sud hotel, built in 1963. The new hotel holds its place with any other in Africa. Among its features is a swimming pool unique in the continent. It's base is plastic, built in the Californian style.
The French Ambassador was among the guests when the new hotel was opened last Thursday, with the Dahomey Minister of Works.
President Hubert Maga opened the hotel, saying his government was well aware of the contribution to the national economy made by tourism, and in particular by this hotel. Since its construction in 1963 the hotel had deteriorated until it had last its position as one of the best hotels in the area. Now, funds from International Management and a tourist syndicate call Sodatourism totalling one hundred million Central African francs turned the old hotel into what is now. Excellent facilities...fine decor.
The hotel, which boasts a high reputation for good food, now has a dining room to match.
Local people and tourists relax in the hotel bar, and soon they will be able to take a set in a 400-place cinema.
The guests toasted the tourist attractions of Dahomey listed by President Maga, who expressed confidence in the growing tourist industry.
President Maga told the hotel manager that he wanted to build hotels throughout the country.
