  • Description

Guerrillas who fired shells on the Rhodesian eastern border town of Umtali on Thursday night (7 September) were being pursued Friday (8 September) by security forces in the country's northern territory. It was the first attack on the town made by guerrillas from inside Rhodesia. Two other attacks made in the past two years were make from inside Mozambique, and were, blamed on the Frelimo forces.

SYNOPSIS: Thursday night's ten-minute bombardment sent more than two dozen eighty-two millimetre shells into the city centre, wounding two civilians. The guerrilla group, thought to number more than twenty, was positioned on a hilltop just over a mile (2 kilometres) from the centre of Umtali. Residents were forced to retreat to shelters, or to put out lights and take cover in inside rooms of their homes as the shells pounded the town. One missile scored a direct hit on an empty police house, burning it out, and at least four vehicles were hit.

A Security Forces spokesman later said the guerrillas, who support Robert Mugabe's patriotic Front, had broken off the attack themselves, and were being tracked by troops.
