Two more RAF 5 1/2-ton 'tallboy' bombs were found, Jan 19, in the drained Sorpe dam reservoir, North Rhine-Westphalia. Only two weeks ago one of the same calibre was defused on the bed of the lake.
In the neighbouring village of Langscheid local officials and police held conference. A spokesman said that the village would again be evacuated for the defusing. No date has yet been set of or the operation and the German explosives expert, Herr Walter Mitzke, has arranged to visit Langscheid on Jan 21.
The last 'Tallboy' - dropped by RAF 'Dambusters' during a raid on the dam, Oct 15 1944 - was defused by Mitzke and Flt.Lt. James Walters an RAF armaments officer.
This discovery confirms a RAF statement that two more of the bombs dropped during that raid were missing.
