  • Description

The President of Portugal, General Antonio Ramalho Eanes, visited Oporto in northern Portugal on Friday (3 September) in his first official visit outside Lisbon since his election last June.

SYNOPSIS: President Eanes had promised during his election campaign that his first official visit if elected would be to Oporto, one of the main cities of the conservative northern area. Two bombs exploded in Oporto just before the President arrived. One injured a person outside the regional headquarters of the residence of regional commander Antonio Pires Veloso.

A cheering crowd of about 20,000 people gathered in the city centre to hear General Eanes. Commenting on the bombs, he said these incidents had to end. The General said democracy would be defended intransigently, and there was no place any more for coups. He called for an end the luxury of useless quarrels.

General Eanes criticised nationalised industries agrarian reform and revolutionary turbulence in his speech. He said the impoverished rural population would no longer agree to pay for the deficits of nationalised industries, while the agrarian reform programme, which had entailed large scale expropriation of private land, continued to show errors and excesses. The General added that the organisation of education was lamentable.

The Portuguese leader also visited an industrial complex while he was in Oporto. The civil governor had asked shops, businesses and factories to close for five hours so that the people could pay homage to the President. In his speech General Eanes said the country needed harmony, peace, stability and security. After visiting Oporto, General Eanes was due to fly to the Azores town of Horta to preside over the opening session of the archipelago's new regional assembly.
