    IN DAKAR LAST WEEK, TROOPS SEARCHED MOSLEMS AT BARBED WIRE BARRICADES BEFORE WORSHIPPERS ENTERED THE CITY'S NEW GREAT MOSQUE FOR PRAYERS.

    FOLLOWING A DISPUTE OVER THE APPOINTMENT OF AN IMAM, TROOPS AND POLICE SURROUNDED THE MOSQUE THREE HOURS BEFORE PRAYERS BEGAN. THERE WERE NO INCIDENTS AS THOUSANDS ATTENDED THE PRAYERS AT THE NEW MOSQUE.

    THE DISPUTE CAME INTO THE OPEN EARLY LAST WEEK WHEN THE PRO-GOVERNMENT DAILY NEWSPAPER "DAKAR MATIN" ANNOUNCED THAT EL HADJ ABDOUL AZIZ, KHALIF-GENERAL OF ONE OF SENEGAL'S TWO MAIN MOSLEM BROTHERHOODS, HAD BEEN ELECTED IMAM OF THE NEW MOSQUE.

    THE FOLLOWING DAY THE PAPER GAVE EQUAL PROMINENCE TO A LETTER FROM EL HADJ AMADOU LANINE DIENS, GRAND IMAM OF WHAT WAS PREVIOUSLY CONSIDERED DAKAR'S MAIN MOSQUE, DENYING THE VALIDITY OF THE KHALIF-GENERAL'S ELECTION. HE DESCRIBED THE ELECTION AS "PURE FANTASY".

    MEANWHILE PRESIDENT SENGHOR OF SENEGAL HAS HAD TALKS WITH HIS FOREIGN MINISTER. DOUDOU THIAN, A MEMBER OF THE OTHER PRINCIPAL BROTHERHOOD THE MOCRIDES. THEY PRODUCE AT LEAST HALE OF THE COUNTRY'S PRINCIPAL PRODUCE, GROUNDNUTS.
