Background: In many countries of the world, the First of May is celebrated as May Day - the day of the workers. In Calcutta, a demonstration was organised by Communists in support of the workers' struggles in the world. More than 15,000 people took part in the procession, which ended in a rally at the city centre where a Resolution was passed naming May Day an "International Day of Working-Class Solidarity", and calling for support of the freedom struggles in East Pakistan, Indo-China and throughout South America and Africa.
