Background: AMERICAN TROOPS HAVE PUSHED INTO THE HUGE FRENCH-OWNED MICHELIN RUBBER PLANTATION, 40 MILES NORTHWEST OF SAIGON IN THEIR LATEST MOVE TO STEM THE THREE-WEEK-OLD NORTH VIETNAMESE OFFENSIVE IN THE SOUTH. THE AMERICAN THRUST, CONDEMNED OPERATION RUBBER AND SPEARHEADED BY A FIVE-MILE-LONG ARMOURED COLUMN, TOOK THE NORTH VIETNAMESE BY SURPRISE.

FOR MANY YEARS, THERE'S BEEN OFFICIAL RELUCTANCE TO BREAK INTO THE PLANTATION WHICH COVERS AN AREA OF 36 SQUARE MILES. THE SAIGON GOVERNMENT AND FRENCH OWNERS OF THE PLANTATION HAVE BEEN ANXIOUS TO PREVENT ANY DAMAGE TO THE STILL-VALUABLE TREES.

UNTIL NOW ACTION IN THE AREA HAVE BEEN LIMITED TO A FEW MINOR CLASHES. THE PLANTATION HAS BEEN A VIET CONG STRONGHOLD FOR 20 YEARS. THE MAIN OBJECT OF THE AMERICAN PUSH WAS TO HALT THE ADVANCE OF NORTH VIETNAMESE AND VIET CONG TROOPS BELIEVED TO BE MOVING TOWARDS SAIGON AND TEMPORARILY RESTING IN THE PLANTATION.

THE AMERICANS ENCOUNTERED LITTLE RESISTANCE. MOST OF THE ENEMY TROOPS HAD LEFT THE AREA HURRIEDLY, LEAVING BEHIND SUPPLIES AND WEAPONS.

A NUMBER OF PACKS CONTAINED WALLETS, DIARIES AND NORTH VIETNAMESE MONEY.

THE AMERICANS QUICKLY THREW A CORDON AROUND THE PLANTATION IN AN EFFORT TO STOP THE NORTH VIETNAMESE ESCAPE.
