Background: A HIGH POLL WAS FORECAST IN JORDAN'S GENERAL ELECTION HELD YESTERDAY, WHEN VOTES -- ALL MEN - WENT TO CHOOSE FROM AMONG 137 CANDIDATES FOR 53 SEATS IN THE COUNTRY'S HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

IN AMMAN, 23 CANDIDATES ARE COMPETING FOR EIGHT SEATS IN THE HOUSE, WHICH HOLDS 60 DEPUTIES. HOWEVER, SEVEN HAVE ALREADY BEEN RETURNED UNOPPOSED, FIVE OF THEM REPRESENTING THE JERUSALEM DISTRICT.

BRISK POLLING WAS REPORTED THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY YESTERDAY, DESPITE A BROADCAST ON DAMASCUS SYRIA RADIO, URGING THE PEOPLE NOT TO VOTE BECAUSE THE ELECTIONS WERE RIGGED.

THE OLD HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES WAS DISSOLVED BY ROYAL DECREE LAST DECEMBER. SINCE THEN, A VIGOROUS ELECTION CAMPAIGN HAS BEEN FOUGHT BY CANDIDATES WHO HAVE MOSTLY PROMISED TO DO SOMETHING TO STRENGTHEN THE ECONOMY AND TACKLE POVERTY.

IT IS ESTIMATED THAT HALF A MILLION JORDANIANS OUT OF A TOTAL POPULATION OF TWO MILLIONS WERE ENTITLED TO VOTE. FINAL RETURNS ARE NOT EXPECTED UNTIL TOMORROW.
