Background: SPAIN YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) PROPOSED TALKS WITH BRITAIN, UNDER THE AEGIS OF THE UNITED NATIONS IF NECESSARY, TO DISCUSS HER CLAIM TO GIBRALTAR. IN A WORLD AFFAIRS DEBATE AT THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY, SPAIN DESCRIBED THE BRITISH TERRITORY AS "A COLONY ON OUR OWN SOIL" AND "A CANCER" WHICH ENDANGERED THE SPANISH ECONOMY.

EARLIER THIS MONTH, THE UNITED NATIONS "24 COMMITTEE" WAS ASKED TO TAKE ACTION TO HELP GIBLALTAR GET INDEPENDENCE. THIS COMMITTEE WAS SET UP TO INVESTIGATE CLAIMS AGAINST COLONIAL POWERS.

THIS CLAIM, SUBMITTED BY FOUR SOUTH AMERICAN AND ARAB COUNTRIES, WAS SUPPORTED BY SPAIN. IT BROUGHT A SWIFT REPLAY FROM THE PEOPLE OF GIBRALTAR. SIR JOSHUA HASSAN, THE CHIEF MEMBER OF THE GIBRALTAR LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL FLEW WITH ANOTHER MEMBER OF THE ADMINISTRATION, MR. P.J. ISOLA, TO THE UNITED NATIONS, WHERE THEY TOLD THE COMMITTEE THAT THE PEOPLE OF GIBRALTAR FEEL THEY ARE A PART OF BRITAIN, AND WISHED TO STAY THAT WAY.

FILM SHOWS THE DELEGATION'S RETURN TO GIBRALTAR YESTERDAY, AND THE ENTHUSIASTIC WELCOME THEY RECEIVED AT A RALLY IN THE MAIN SQUARE OF THE TOWN.
