Background: The abortive coup attempt centred around Wattang airport at Vientiane. It was here that right-wing Air Force officers, ???llied to exiled extremists in Thailand, attempted to take over the administrative capital of Laos before agreement could be reached with the Communist lathet Lao. Negotiations are nearing their conclusion to end the 20 year civil war in Laos. Government forces struck back swiftly at the rebels, as they flew T-28 bombers over the city. Resistance on the ground was light and the airport and radio station were both retaken after only a few hours. A former Air Force General, Thao Ma, later died when his T-28 was shot down. Other leaders fled by plane to Thailand. Casualties were light. Damage was insignificant. The Laos government has now announced that 10 men have been shot for their part in the coup. Others are being south in Thailand. The Thai government has offered its full cooperation.
