    The East German Minister for Defence, General Heinz Hoffman, has held top level talks with the Indian Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, at her office in New Delhi.

    General Hoffman is on a six day visit to India at the invitation of the Indian Government.

    On Monday (5 January) General Hoffman said he hoped his visit would lead to "many more thorough-going impressions and, above all, to information with regard to the evaluation of recent political and military problems."
    The General said his visit was also an expression of "the high esteem the workers, farmers and soldiers of the German Democratic Republic have for the Indian people and the government of Mrs. Gandhi and will certainly be a contribution of deepening the knowledge of the problems of India and appreciation of its policies."
    Later General Hoffman and his aides called on the Indian Minister for Defence, Mr. Bansi Lal.

    Earlier Mr. Lal had said he "appreciated the consistent and principled support that the government of the German Democratic Republic have extended to our initiative for the establishment of a durable peace on the subcontinent through direct dialogue and without outside interference."
    General Hoffman is the first East German Defence Minister to visit India.

    During his tour the General will also hole talks with the President, Mr. Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, and the Indian External Affairs Minister, Mr. Y.B. Chavan.

    SYNOPSIS: New Delhi, India, where the Indian Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, has been holding talks with the East German Minister for Defence, General Heinz Hoffman. The East German Defence Minister is in India on a six-day state visit at the invitation of the Indian Government.

    General Hoffman said he hoped his visit would lead to mush more information with regard to the evaluation of recent political and military problems in India. The General added that his visit expressed the high esteem that the East German people have for the people and Government of India.

    Later the Indian Minister for Defence, Mr. Bansi Lal, held lengthy discussions with the East German delegation. Mr. Lal said he appreciated the consistent and principled support that the East German Government has extended to the indian government and people.

    Mr. Lal said the East German people and Government had shown their support for the Indian Government's initiative for the establishment of a durable peace on the Indian subcontinent through direct dialogue and without outside interference. General Hoffman is the first East German Defence Minister to visit India. During his tour, the General will also hold talks with the indian President, Mr. Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, and the External Affairs Minister, Mr. Y.B. Chavan.
