  • Description

GREEK UNIONIST MARCHED WITH ANTI-RUSSIAN PLACARDS TO THE SOVIET EMBASSY IN NICOSIA YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) TO PROTEST ABOUT STATEMENTS CONCERNING CYPRUS THAT MR. KOSYGIN, THE SOVIET PRIME MINISTER, IS REPORTED TO HAVE MADE DURING HIS RECENT VISIT TO TURKEY.

MR. KOSYGIN, WHO RETURNED TO MOSCOW ON THE 27TH OF DECEMBER AFTER A WEEK'S VISIT TO TURKEY, IS REPORTED TO HAVE CALLED FOR THE WITHDRAWAL OF ALL FOREIGN TROOPS IN CYPRUS, WHERE SOLDIERS FORM BRITAIN, GREECE, TURKEY AND A SPECIAL UNITED NATIONS FORCE ARE AT PRESENT BASED.

THE UNIONISTS MARCHED FROM THEIR HEADQUARTERS CARRYING PLACARDS BEARING SUCH SLOGANS AS "KOSYGIN -- CYPRUS IS GREEK" AND "CYRPUS REFUSES TO BECOME A NEW BERLIN". AT THE SOVIET EMBASSY, THE POLICE ORDERED THE DEMONSTRATORS TO DISPERSE.

A DELEGATION FROM THE DEMONSTRATORS WAS FINALLY ALLOWED TO ENTER THE EMBASSY TO PRESENT A WRITTEN PROTEST MESSAGE TO THE SOVIET AMBASSADOR, MR. ERMOSHIN. IMMEDIATELY AFTERWARDS THE DEMONSTRATORS, WHO HAD ACTED PEACEABLY THROUGHOUT, QUIETLY DISPENSED.
