  • Description

Refael Herrera retained the World Boxing Council's Bantamweight title in Mexico City on Saturday night (25 May) when he knocked out follow Mexican Romed Anaya. The K.O. came in the sixth round. Herrera caught Anaya with a punishing right, which sent him down between the lower ropes. Anaya saved himself from crashing into the first row of spectators, but remained slumped against the ropes for the full count of ten.

It was Herrera's fight almost all the way. Anaya began round one with an initial barrage of blows, which Herrera managed to weather. Then he took control, dealing out heavy punishment to Anaya's head and body. Anaya was constantly retreating and several times was pinned against the ropes.

Even in the first round, it was clear that Herrera was in command. He knocked his opponent to the canvas toward the end of the round and from then on looked a winner all the way.

The Mexicans have dominated the Bantamweight Division since 1969, when Ruben Olivares took the title from Australian Lionel Rose. Herrera won his title in March, 1969.
