Background: The Spring export commodities fair of the People's Republic of China opened in the south China city of Canton this week (15 April). Several thousand businessmen from throughout the world waited outside the 10-storey exhibition building as a deafening din of firecrackers provided a prelude to the official opening.
Inside the main exhibition hall, and two smaller buildings along the Pearl River, this year's Spring fair displayed a full range of Chinese export commodities and manufactured goods. About one-fifth of China's total annual exports is expected to be negotiated during the month-long fair, which is held twice yearly.
SYNOPSIS: About five-thousand businessmen from all over the world attended the opening of the spring trade fair in Canton this week. The People's Republic of China inaugurated the twice-yearly event in 1957.
Although many nations are represented at the fair, the largest contingent of businessmen if from Japan. About one-fifth of China's total annual exports is expected to be negotiated during this month-long export commodities fair. The Chinese people are also attending in large numbers to view some of the thirty-thousand items on display.
Seven of the ten floors of the main exhibition hall have been given over to displays. One floor of the building is devoted to models and pictures of how Chinese industry and agriculture have benefited from the example of two model communes.
It is the textile exhibits, however, that often garner the most interest, especially for the Japanese and Hong Kong businessmen. Most businessmen said they were impressed by the range of Chinese products.
Chinese carpets are still much admired throughout the world for their high quality and exceptional beauty. Many people attending the fair said that this Spring trade exhibit is the most attractive and professional display yet organised by the Chinese.
